Project overview: The decline in our ability to effectively navigate our environment is one of the many deficits that occur as we age. This is particularly pronounced in atypical ageing, such as in those who develop a form of dementia. My project seeks to develop an understanding of the role of attention and related cognitive functions in this decline of navigational ability. I will utilise immersive virtual environments and eyetracking methodology to assess the role of attention when learning unfamiliar places and when using previously learned spatial information.
