The Bournemouth Rock is an independent student newspaper providing a compelling mix of original news, sports, features and opinions. Januarys edition of The Rock included an article on Dr James Gavin’s research, Lecturer in Exercise Physiology at Bournemouth University.
This column explored some the research that James had been involved in and was hoping to develop in the future. Exercise and stretching training on custom-built staircases with 3-D analysis cameras was used to improve the stability of older adults when climbing stairs to make the negotiation of stairs a lot more accessible.
“Older adults were filmed walking up and down a custom-built staircase with 3D analysis cameras,” explains James. “In addition, force plates were embedded in each step to measure ground reaction forces, and each step could be adjusted, like height for example to make stair negotiation more challenging.”
