The Bournemouth Bio-Beach project team are working with two local schools to design structures that will increase biodiversity on groynes along the local coastline.
The students from Avonbourne School and Harewood College will be monitoring their creations to see how many organisms have colonised them.
The Bio-Beach project is in collaboration with Bournemouth Borough Council’s Coastal Activity Park and is led by Dr Roger Herbert in BU’s Faculty of Science and Technology.
The project is funded through BU’s Fusion Investment Fund and will stimulate sustainable coastal development research and improve public engagement in the marine environment.
Researchers will develop their own structures for Boscombe Beach. These will provide refugia for marine organisms and fulfill a variety of other research aims.
