Photo of the Week: The Hulks of Holes Bay

Paris Iliopoulos, Faculty of Science & Technology

“The Hulks of Holes Bay”

In this next ‘Photo of the Week’ we will be looking at research being carried out by BU’s Paris Iliopoulos.

The shot is off two hulks in Holes Bay, Poole Harbour. he first recorded these particular hulks as part of his undergraduate degree in Marine Archaeology. During his postgraduate degree he was able to become involved in a wide area survey of the whole harbours intertidal area led by Tom Cousins, of which these two small pleasure craft have been included. The survey has uncovered numerous interesting vessels including one of the first purpose built aircraft carriers, a “Thorneycroft Towing lighter” and it has allowed them to continue researching the many other historic vessels that lie around Poole Harbour.  He returned to the area during a striking sunset to take this HDR shot of the hulks.

If you would like more information on the project, you can contact Paris here.

This was an entry to BU’s first research photography competition and you can view the entries to the most recent competition here.
